Founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733 AD, Bharatpur, was carved out of the region formerly known as Mewat. It was said that Bahartpur was named after Lord Rama's brother, Bharat. The other brother of Lord Rama, Lakshma, was worshiped by the Bharatpur rulers as the family deity.
