Bharatpur

Founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733 AD, Bharatpur, was carved out of the region formerly known as Mewat. It was said that Bahartpur was named after Lord Rama's brother, Bharat. The other brother of Lord Rama, Lakshma, was worshiped by the Bharatpur rulers as the family deity.

There are lots of forts, palaces and other tourist attractions in Bharatpur. Built by Maharaja Surajmal these forts and palaces attract tourists from near and far. Bharatpur has a lot to offer to its tourists. The Keolodeo Ghana National Park with its rich wildlife, the magnificient Bharatpur Palace, the historic meuseum, the majestic Lohargarh fort and the mystic temples all have a story to tell here in Bharatpur. The most sort after attraction in Bharatpur is the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.

One of the finest bird parks the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary has numerous migratory birds from as far as Siberia and Central Asia. There are interesting species like pelicans, shanks, wagtails, flycatchers, buntings, pipits and lots more. Be it the migratory water birds or waterside birds, Bharatpur National Park also includes the like of Sambar, Nilgai and Chital.
